Identify Signature

Question

Hello,

I have not been able to identify the artist signature on this painting.  It is a very well done work so I believe it is probably by a known artist.  The painting is Oil on board, 18 x 24 1/2 in., Signed and dated 1918 lower right.  As you can see, the back of the painting appears to be the start of an unfinished work.  Any help will be greatly appreciate.

Best Regards,

Doug Johnon

  1. Welcome to the forum!

I agree that it’s a fine painting. I am not sure, but maybe it could be Julius Seyler (German 1873-1958).

I haven’t found a perfect match concerning the style (the brush work), but there is a lot to look through. This painting is from 1917:

This from 1918 does not have a photo:

His signature can be seen here:

The J is written differently on those, but the last name is very similar, with the elongated R at the end.

  2. I am taking the liberty to post the reply from Doug Johnson sent as a private message:

    Hello,

This my first post and I am not sure how to response to the comments. I hope that you all will receive this email.

Thank you for your responses. I agree that it is Julius Seyler. askART.com has an image of a Seyler signature that is almost identical to the one on my painting.

I would like to sell the work so now I can proceed to do so.

    Best Regards,

    Doug Johnson
